Recipe Organization

February 22, 2011

For the past year, I have barely cooked anything, for several reasons.  For starters, I didn’t have “my kitchen,” I didn’t have access to my usual foods, and preparing vegetables and fruits was more difficult because of the high risk of contamination.  Yes, these are all just excuses, but the point is, I have come to realize how much I enjoy cooking and how much I missed it when I was in the Dominican.

This has caused me to go a little bit insane on collecting interesting recipes that I want to try once I get back home.  I have over a dozen word documents with recipes I’ve found online (most of them thanks to Oprah) pasted into them, separated into various categories that seem to make sense to me.  Then I realized, how am I going to deal with all of this!

My first thought was to create a database from scratch, which is a great idea, except, that’s not exactly possible on my MacBook.  So then I looked into programs that could organize and sort the hundreds of recipes I have accumulated.  I was able to find a few, but then I remembered how awkward it is to cook while reading off a screen, having to make sure you scroll with a clean part of your hand and trying to ensure that ingredients don’t end up on your computer.  There is also something to be said for a well-used cookbook or recipe card.  You know what I’m talking about, the recipe card that is in your mom’s handwriting, that has oil stains on and has faded over time.  Or the much-loved cookbook that has various stains, sticky notes on your favorite recipes and handwritten additions or variations.  Google pointed me to another way to organize these recipes which got me really excited.

Essentially, I will be getting myself a nice moleskin notebook (I adore moleskin notebooks!) and then, once I’ve made a recipe that I like, I will take the time to write out the recipe in the notebook.  So cooking with the MacBook will have to continue for a bit.

The sentimentalist in me likes to think that one day someone will come to cherish this book as a beautiful handwritten homemade cookbook masterpiece.  I’m also going to buy some cute stickers to place on recipes that I really like.  If I get really ambitious, I might even add my own photographs!  Geek much?

Hundreds! I envy you. Good luck on the road to organization, and do do do add pictures. What’s the point of having all this technology available to us if we don’t use it for the greater good of food hehe!

    PS Cool blog, maşa Allah
